The number of congregations with part-time or no clergy is growing in many denominations. This workshop will present an overview of this phenomenon, particularly its extent in Province V, along with a look at the related issue of Episcopal clergy shortages.
Creative approaches to supporting lay-led congregations have included priest companions, licensed pastoral leaders, mutual ministry, and bi-vocational ministry. We'll discuss what works, drawing upon lessons learned in the Province V Lay-led Congregations Network over the last several years. Participants will be invited to share their own experience. Various resources will be presented, including online educational opportunities, leadership coaching, parish educational programs, liturgical supports, and the opportunity for mutual support through the Province V Network. Presenter: Jim Mogensen, St. Aidan's, Ann Arbor, Michigan Province V Lay-led Congregations Network convener

Imagine a world where people plan for their death with intentionality and purpose, where all of us recognize we are “terminal” and approach life and death with equal reverence and respect.
As an End-of-Life Doula, I am experienced in helping folks consider and plan for their “ending.” Whether it’s a Death Cafe, a book study, a three-week faith formation series, or workshop on Advance Care Planning, I will offer you tips and suggestions for creating safe spaces to talk about and understand all things End-of-Life. This workshop will not focus on medical interventions but will inspire you to help your congregation with practical preparation and thoughtful conversations. Living fully must embrace the inevitability of dying. It need not be another “elephant in the room” or something to be feared or superstitious about. I will include a PowerPoint, handouts, book lists, and resources. We will look at the remarkable number of women named in Romans 16, and at Paul’s complex rhetoric concerning women in church. We will look at the North African prophet and martyrs Perpetua and the pregnant slave Felicity, who died in Carthage at the beginning of the third century. Next, we will explore the remarkable life and career of the Empress Pulcheria, who presided over the Council of Chalcedon. In the western church, we will examine the remarkable English abbess Hild of Whitby, instrumental in the conversion of Northumbria, and the twelfth-century religious woman Christina of Markyate. Finally, we will conclude with that most underestimated of Henry VIII’s wives, Catherine Parr, who against all odds, “survived” to shape the church in the English Reformation.
